The union’s education initiative continues to transform lives by providing educational opportunities to children of county government workers.
The County Government Workers Union is proud to announce that 500 students have been awarded scholarships through our Education Support Program for the 2024 academic year. This marks the largest number of scholarships awarded since the program’s inception in 2020.
The scholarship program, funded through member contributions and partnerships with educational institutions, provides financial support for children of CGWU members pursuing various levels of education, from primary school to university.
This Year’s Awards Include:
– 200 primary school scholarships
– 150 secondary school scholarships
– 100 technical and vocational training scholarships
– 50 university scholarships
“Education is the foundation of our future,” said Peter Kiprotich, CGWU Education Secretary. “By investing in the education of our members’ children, we’re not just supporting individual families – we’re building a better Kenya for everyone.”
The scholarship recipients were selected based on academic merit, financial need, and their parents’ active participation in union activities. This year’s recipients come from all 47 counties, ensuring equitable distribution of opportunities across the country.
Among this year’s recipients is Grace Mutindi from Machakos County, whose mother works as a county health officer. “This scholarship means everything to my family,” Grace said. “It will allow me to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor and giving back to my community.”
The program has seen remarkable success over the years:
– Over 1,500 students supported since 2020
– 95% completion rate for scholarship recipients
– 80% of university graduates now employed in meaningful careers
– Many recipients now work in county governments, giving back to their communities
CGWU also provides mentorship programs, career guidance, and internship opportunities to scholarship recipients, ensuring they have comprehensive support throughout their educational journey.
Applications for the 2025 scholarship program will open in February 2025. We encourage all eligible members to apply and take advantage of this life-changing opportunity for their children.
The union remains committed to breaking the cycle of poverty through education and continues to seek additional partnerships to expand the program’s reach.
